Motor 1.8T 20VT
Known formally as the "1.8 R4 20VT" and informally known as the "1.8T". Launched in 1995, this powerhouse quickly developed a reputation for the huge range of its engine powers supplied 'ex works' in the various VAG models.
The 1.8T is produced with a cast iron engine block and an aluminum cylinder head with double overhead camshafts. It was designed with five valves per cylinder. The exhaust valves are slightly larger than the intake valves. This intake configuration made the engine efficient at the time. The compression ratio was set at 9.5:1 and for the high power engines (which are equipped with the K04 turbo) at 9:1.
The actual displacement of 1,781 cc comes from a bore of 81 mm with a stroke of 86.4 mm. Part of the engine's inherent power comes from its use of a forged steel crankshaft, split forged connecting rods and 'Mahle' forged pistons (in some applications).
The turbo provides a boost pressure of 0.6 bar (8.7 psi) on most variants of this engine, although the 180 hp engines from 2002 received a boost pressure of 0.8 bar (11.6 psi).
The most common turbos are the K03 & K03's (150-180 hp) and K04 (210-240).
